Battle-of-the-Atlantic-(1942)

Page history last edited by td 10 mos ago

Introduction: It is summer in the North Atlantic, 1942.  Admiral Dönitz’s German U-boats are prowling the east coast of North America and the mid Atlantic shipping lanes, inflicting heavy losses on the Allied merchant fleet carrying desperately need supplies to Europe.  German submariners are calling this “The Happy Time,” as Allied defensive measures are weak and the convoys disorganized.  From January to August, 1942, Axis submarines have sunk 609 ships totaling 3.1 million tons for the loss of only 22 U-boats.

Battle Results:  This was a victory for the German U-Boats.  The Allied convoy sent their destroyers ahead of the merchant vessels, nervously searching for the U-Boats.  The lead destroyer was torpedoed from two directions.  The battle went well for the Germans as they clobbered the destroyers.  The Allies struck back with a successful depth charge run that destroyed one U-Boat.  The Germans went on the offensive, but lost two more U-Boats when they were caught on the surface and destroyerd.  The surviving merchant vessels made a run for it but were torpedoed and sunk one by one.  At the very end of the battle a long range torpedo shot sandk one last merchant vessel before it could escape, tipping the battle in favor of the U-Boats.

We did great against the U-Boats in the beginning.  One sailor cleared a side of the ocean and the merchants used it, scurrying across board.  The Destroyers tried to find the Subs but it wasn't easy.  We were all cofident until the second to last turn.  We were so close to the mine field when they started catching up.  Then, a torpedo was fired, and it hit.  The ship sunk just one move away from victory.  Those U-Boats are just too good.
