Battle Report by Mr. Fritz:  The Union decided to strongly defend Devil's Den with all the sharpshooters and a regular infantry unit.  The Confederates attacked across a broad front.  They poured heavy fire into Devil's Den, wiping out one unit of Sharpshooters.  The commander of the Devil's Den force wanted to retreat but he was ordered to hold his position while all the other Union forces retreated across the stream and deployed on Little Round Top.

This was an effective tacticas most of the Confederate army deployed to attack the men in Devil's Den.  It was a bloody fight, and the defenders threw back a Confederate charge before the pressure became too great.  They tried to flee but were cut off and destroyed.  By this time the Union was well entrenched on Little Round Top and their reinforcements were starting to arrive.  The Confederates gathered their forces for the assault up the hill.  They were somewhat understrength because some of their units has started too far away and spent the entire battle marching.

The Union line opened fire and dealt out a lot of damage.  the Confederates returned fire with equal effectiveness.  Time was running out for the Confederates as the sun went down and the last Union reinforcements arrived.  They ordered an all out charge up the hill.  The results were mixed.  Two artillery batteries were overrun but one bravely defended their cannons are drove away their attackers.  The Confederates succeeded in gaining a foothold on the strategic position, but that was all.  Some of the Confederate commanders insisted they could still win, but Lee disagreed and ordered them to withdrawal.  This was a Union victory.
